Great job on the Hard Drive Clock and thanks for the mention about the clock that I built.
"The clock works by removing the top of the hard drive and cutting a slot into the platter. Then lights are mounted underneath and flashed as it spins. By timing it right you can create the illusion of clock hands, color bars or other designs. I have quite a few magnets lying around so my first thought was I could eliminate 2 of the three platters by using a magnet on the top platter and a magnetic sensor to detect it. The one disadvantage to this method is I now have to cover the entire ...

led hard drive clock lights up the night

Hardware hacker Ian Matthew decided to see if he could turn a hard drive into a clock. But this isn’t one of those lazy designs where you just stick some clock hands through a hard drive platter. On the contrary, Ian went way over the top.
A narrow slot cut into the platter allows a set of flashing colored LEDs to show through as it spins. It’s powered by a PIC18F252 controller, along with custom software which adjusts the LED patterns accordingly. ...

Ian Smith created this supremely cool clock from an old hard drive, some tri-color LEDs and a PIC microcontroller. It works using a simple persistence of vision technique. The disk platter has a narrow slit cut in it and the LEDs are all positioned behind the spinning platter, causing light to shine out through the slit. By adjusting the color of the LEDs as the disk rotates, you can conceivably create any sort of pie-chart style graphics you like, from Pac Man to the hands of a clock.
