Virtual Reality using a Nintendo Wiimote and IR LEDs
Hacked Gadgets - DIY Tech Blog —
This is a fantastic application of the Nintendo Wiimote. Timo Fleisch of Germany has created a system that uses some Wii remotes which can be purchased at any local department store and some IR LEDs which are also readily available to create a very usable virtual environment. You hold an item infront of a monitor which will be displaying the virtual item, above this screen there is a Wiimote mounted that is looking down towards the table. The item you hold has some IR LEDs mounted on it to allow the Wiimote camera to determine its exact orientation. A second Wiimote enhances the effect by looking at the ...
Virtual reality with Wiimote and IR LEDs
MAKE Magazine: hacks —
This German hacker created a desktop VR rig with 6DOF (degrees of freedom) tracking, using two Wiimotes and a stereo monitor. I like when he put the glasses on and then says: "Don't laugh. This is serious cutting-edge technology." (I laughed anyway.)
Three of the four LEDs are aligned in a line with only slightly different height. The fourth LED is mounted above the line with more height. This special order of the lights is needed by the algorithm to be able to assign the IR-points recognized by the Wiimote to the original LEDs of the beacon. It is also important that the fourth LED ...
VR via Wiimotes to make shopping more immersive

wiimote_vr_desktop_3d.jpg This DIY is a really nice VR setup by Timo Fleisch using two Wiimotes; one for hand tracking, one for head tracking. The combination of these devices creates a VR environment that will allow virtual shoppers to examine an object without really going to the local store. The contraption does not really allow the user a feel for the texture so not really immersive as the headset that mimics all five senses ...
